Informed Ceramics
Shown at the 2017 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism (Production City). Three robot tools (hotwire, spindle and clay extruder) shaped streamlined molds and deposited clay onto them, producing an installation of 19 porous ceramic panels.

Overview
For “Production City” at the 2017 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, BAT used an industrial robot and clay 3D printing to fabricate with ceramic (clay) as a raw material, rather than in the modular units commonly used at architectural scale.
Clay Extruder
We first designed a clay extruder that can push out clay body with the right moisture content for deposition. Depending on the moisture content of the clay, we built pump-type and syringe-type extruders and ran extrusion tests.
Methodology
Using the robot's six-axis motion, we deposited clay onto the surface of three-dimensional molds. Using three robot tools in sequence (hotwire, spindle and clay extruder), we machined streamlined molds that support the clay's shape, then deposited clay onto them in specific patterns to create three-dimensional porous panels. We then planned and fabricated an installation of 19 panels made in the same way.
