Overview
ManufaBrick is a corner brick fabrication project for a house in Wirye designed by the architecture practice lifethings (삶것). It began as a fabrication project for the Production City exhibition at the 2017 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism and was then applied to a real building.
For the masonry facade, the architect planned the first course of bricks to sit level along the ground, with the mortar joints at the corners widening toward the top so that the last course aligns with the building's skyline.
Because the corner bricks on every face meet at different angles, BAT proposed a corner design that can be machined in no more than two cuts per brick within one minute, and fabricated and installed a total of 576 corner bricks using robotic grinding.
